Padre Pio’s Final Mass on Sept. 22, 1968
On Sept. 22, 1968, St. Padre Pio celebrated what would become known as his final Mass—just hours before he died in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy.
The beloved Capuchin friar was 81 years old and in very poor health.
After a lifetime of ministry marked by incredible spiritual gifts, including bilocation and the stigmata, in addition to long hours in the confessional, spiritual direction, suffering, and devotion to the Eucharist, Padre Pio was physically weak. Still, he came to the altar one last time before a church filled with pilgrims.

The occasion came amid observances of the 50th anniversary of the stigmata Padre Pio had received in 1918.
Pilgrims had traveled to San Giovanni Rotondo in large numbers, hoping to be present for the frail friar’s Mass. Footage from that day shows Padre Pio moving slowly and laboring through the liturgy, but remaining focused on the Eucharistic sacrifice.

For many Catholics, Padre Pio’s final Mass offers a visible representation of his priesthood.
His life was centered on bringing souls to God through the Mass, confession, prayer, and patient endurance of suffering. Even in his final hours, he returned to the altar.

Later that night, Padre Pio’s health rapidly declined. He received the sacraments, made his confession, and renewed his Franciscan vows. In the early morning of Sept. 23, 1968, he died peacefully at the friary. He was reportedly holding his Rosary and calling on Jesus and Mary.
When is Padre PIo’s Feast Day?
Saint John Paul II canonized Padre Pio on June 16, 2002. The Catholic Church now celebrates his memorial on September 23.
Padre Pio’s final Mass is one of the most memorable moments of his lifetime. It was not simply a final public appearance. It was the final sacrificial offering of a priest whose entire ministry had been shaped by love for Christ in the Eucharist.
