Filming for the two-part sequel of Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ” has wrapped up filming in Italy. 👏
Mel Gibson Statement
In an announcement that dropped on Friday, May 22, 2026, Lionsgate released the first photo from the highly anticipated upcoming film. He also announced new release dates, both of which have been delayed.
Both films will hit theaters on Ascension Thursday. The first on May 6, 2027, and the second on May 25, 2028.
“This film represents a major part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist,” Gibson said. “This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”
Cast of ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’
“The Resurrection of the Christ” will feature an all-new cast. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will portray Jesus (replacing Jim Caviezel), Polish actress Kasia Smutniak will portray the Virgin Mary (replacing Maia Morgenstern), and Cuban actress Mariela Garriga will portray Mary Magdalene (replacing Monica Bellucci).
