This is such incredible news! 🥳

Lionsgate announced that Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ,” which is the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ,” will hit theaters in two parts.

Part one of the sequel will release on Good Friday – March 26, 2027. Part two will hit theaters 40 days later on Ascension Thursday – May 6, 2027.

Filming will begin in Italy in August.

“I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, ‘The Resurrection of Christ,’ will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and requires many theaters and stage constructions,” CEO of Rome’s Cinecittà Studios Manuela Cacciamani told the Italian source  Il Sole 24 Ore.

Mel Gibson has promised that “The Resurrection of the Christ” will be “the biggest film in history” and called the script “a masterpiece.”

Jim Caviezel will reprise his role as Jesus and Maia Morgenstern will reprise her role as Mary.

Since filming is taking place 20 years later, Gibson said he will use de-aging CGI technology to depict now-56-year-old Caviezel at age 33.

Lionsgate and the official Instagram account for “The Resurrection of the Christ” movie published a short video of the announcement:

Let us pray for all those involved in this historic film, which could potentially touch and convert many souls to Christ! 🙏
