A powerful new documentary is reminding Catholics that faith and science are not in conflict — they beautifully point to the same Creator.
The Story of Everything, now in theaters nationwide, explores the latest discoveries in cosmology, physics, and biology that reveal the clear signature of intelligent design throughout the universe.
In a recent interview with Archbishop Hicks, Dr. Jay Richards of the Heritage Foundation explained the heart of The Story of Everything:
“If you look at the actual history of science… virtually all of the founders of the major fields of science were launched by Christians or theists, either faithful Catholics or at least conventional Catholics or Protestants.”
Richards discussed the film’s Catholic contributions, explaining Copernicus was Catholic and that Father Georges Lemaître, a Belgian priest, played a central role in developing the Big Bang theory.
“Faith and science were not in competition,” he emphasized.
The film, inspired by Dr. Stephen C. Meyer’s book Return of the God Hypothesis, presents 20th and 21st-century scientific evidence — including the universe’s beginning in time, the fine-tuning of physical laws, and the astonishing information systems within living cells — that points toward a transcendent Creator rather than a purely materialistic explanation.
Archbishop Hicks praised the project for showing this “beautiful both/and” approach: one need not choose between God and science.
During the interview, which aired during Holy Week, he connected the film’s message to the Church’s mission of catechesis, saying this evidence helps Catholics “know something more about God and about the Church.”
Richards, who appears in the film, shared that several contributors are Catholic.
“I’m hoping this will introduce this evidence to the average Catholic who may not yet know about it,” he said.
For Catholics seeking to encounter God through both revelation and reason, The Story of Everything offers a beautiful and intellectually rich experience. It invites viewers to see the universe not as a random accident, but as the work of God, our Creator, whose glory is written into every fabric of the reality we live.
