Hollywood Catholic can confirm through multiple sources that Jim Caviezel will not portray Jesus in the upcoming film, “The Resurrection of the Christ.”
Caviezel starred as Jesus in the “Passion of the Christ,” in 2004. He was again cast as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ,” set to release in 2027.

Jim Caviezel Recast in “The Resurrection of the Christ”
Reports first surfaced on Friday, October 9, 2025, that Caviezel will be recast.
Page Six first broke the news:
Mel Gibson’s long-gestating sequel to “The Passion of the Christ” will start shooting in Rome, but with a completely new cast, an insider told Page Six.
Jim Caviezel won’t return as Jesus, and Monica Bellucci won’t be back as Mary Magdalene in “The Resurrection of the Christ…”
“They’re [currently] meeting with actors [in Rome],” a source familiar with the project told us.
“Another source said they switched it up because ‘they’d [have had] to do a lot of work with the [original] actors… digital stuff, plus the scheduling.’”
“There was a lot of back and forth,” they said, adding the flick has been in pre-production “for a couple of months.”
The Hollywood Reporter stated on October 10:
“Key roles will be recast for the new movies, as Caviezel will not reprise the titular part of Jesus, while Monica Bellucci also won’t return as Mary Magdalene.”
Independent sources for Hollywood Catholic can confirm this information is accurate.
Lionsgate announced in August 2025 that “The Resurrection of the Christ” will hit theaters in two parts.
Part one of the sequel will release on Good Friday – March 26, 2027. Part two will hit theaters 40 days later on Ascension Thursday – May 6, 2027.
