The retreat is believed to be part of his trip to Europe while filming the “The Resurrection of the Christ,” the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ.”
“Upon his arrival, Gibson met with Archimandrite Methodius, the abbot of the monastery, in a friendly and warm atmosphere at one of the most important Serbian holy sites,” the Jerusalem Post also reported. “The monks welcomed him modestly, respecting his wish to avoid publicity during his stay.”

According to this website connected to the Monastery,
Hilandar Monastery is one of 20 monasteries on Mount Athos (the Holy Mount), a peninsula in northeastern Greece. Mount Athos is the only autonomous monastic republic in the world. It is part of the Greek state and under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Although monks have inhabited Mount Athos since the 6th century, the first of the still-existing monasteries was established in 63.
