In a historic moment for Catholic media and faith-based entertainment, “The Chosen” will premiere an episode at the Vatican on June 23, 2025, the Holy See Press Office has announced.
Members of the cast and crew, including Jonathan Roumie (who plays Jesus) and Dallas Jenkins (the series creator), will also meet Pope Leo XIV.
The event, held in Sala San Pio X inside the Vatican Press Office, will showcase Season 5, Episode 4, titled “The Same Coin.” The episode depicts the Last Supper and includes the “dayenu” hymn, a Jewish hymn for Passover.
Additional cast members attending include Elizabeth Tabish (Mary Magdalene), and George Xanthis (St. John).
On June 25, Jonathan Roumie will present a personal gift from The Chosen to Pope Leo XIV during the Pope’s Wednesday General Audience.
With over 770 million episode views worldwide, The Chosen is the first multi-season series about the life of Jesus Christ and has found a strong following with those of many religious backgrounds, including Catholics and Protestants.
As the series moves toward the Passion and Resurrection, two full-length feature films have been announced, with one currently filming in Matera, Italy—a city also featured in The Passion of the Christ.
“The Chosen” is currently filming the crucifixion scene, Roumie announced on his Instagram page.
“There is yet more suffering to endure, not only as my character, but through my own sacrificial offering as an artist to embody and accept every ounce of pain and discomfort associated with the process of making Christ’s own suffering very real to everyone who not only participates in the production, but to those who witness the finished product. I.e., YOU,” Roumie wrote.
