A verified Facebook account claiming to be Mel Gibson provided a reaction to his death, encouraging prayer and mercy to “be shown to him.”

Here is Mel Gibson’s Facebook post below:

“The passing of any man should stir reflection. Pope Francis has gone to meet the Judge of all. I won’t pretend we walked the same road, His papacy brought confusion where there should have been clarity, compromise where there should have been courage. He embraced a modern world that mocks Christ, and in doing so, many souls were led astray.

But only God sees the heart. Only He weighs the soul.

So I pray: May mercy be shown to him. May the truth he obscured in life shine clearly now for those still here. And may the Church, battered though she is, find her way back to the Cross, to tradition, to truth.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine.”

Mel Gibson’s post about Pope Francis generated thousands of reactions and hundreds of comments from social media users.

“I understand and agree with everything you’ve said,” Facebook user Janet Hamilton said. “We must as Christians stand firm on the Word Of God and not conform to the world and stray from Christ’s standards and teachings.”

“Pope Francis fought hard against his illness right to the end,” Hamilton continued. “He was brave. He showed courage and humility. Praying his spirit is at peace.”

“Spoken as an extension of Christ, with honor, respect and even truth. Thank you Mel,” Facebook user Chana Cruz also said. “I understand how many, including myself feel about Pope Francis papacy. But we must all remember to continue to reflect Christ within us.”

“I could not have said it better,” Jimmy Ventura commented. “May he rest in peace and may God have mercy.”

Pray for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul!

  1. I have to say – I do not often agree with or understand Mel Gibson and his actions (with the notable exception of “The Passion of the Christ”, which was magnificent). But I think he was exactly correct in his words.

As time went on in his pontificate, I became less enchanted with Pope Francis for various reasons. But Mel is right. We must step back, so to speak, and let God have the final word, remembering that it is He who matters.

I well remember Pope John Paul being roundly criticized – constantly – during his pontificate, but us, his fellow Catholics. Some even called him the Antichrist, shamefully. And now, we think of him as one of the greatest saints of modern times, and rightfully so. Only God knows our hearts and loves us in spite of our words and actions.

May Pope Francis find eternal joy in the arms of Jesus. God bless and protect all here.
