On February 14, Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after developing bronchitis, according to Vatican announcements. Initially brought in for diagnostic tests and treatment, his condition took became serious this past week.
By February 22, the Vatican said the Holy Father had endured a significant respiratory crisis.
The Holy See office reported that Pope Francis had “an asthma-like respiratory crisis of prolonged intensity,” which required prolonged high-flow oxygen support. Additionally, he underwent a blood transfusion to help stabilize his condition during this critical time.
Prayers and support resulted from the Holy Father’s emergency needs. Groups of religious sisters, clergy, and laity come together outside Gemelli Hospital, joining in prayers for his swift recovery.
Several Catholic leaders provided support for Pope Francis in messages on X (formerly Twitter). They particularly called for prayers for his health and happy death:
Bishop Robert Barron said, “Friends, let us all pray for the health and recovery of our Holy Father.”
Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone posted,“On this the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, pray for the man who sits on that chair, Pope Francis (who brought the throne out last year to be venerated for the first time since 1867).”
Fr. Mike Palmer, CSC, wrote, “Please, please pray for the Holy Father’s healing. And if this is his time, please pray that the Lord grant him the grace of a happy death.”
Fr. Carlos Germosen encouaged, “Storm heaven with your prayers for the Holy Father.”
These heartfelt calls for prayer reflect the deep concern shared across the global Catholic community. As Pope Francis’ medical team closely monitors him, the Catholic faithful remain united in hope and prayer.
Here is a prayer for Pope Francis:
O God, shepherd and ruler of all the faithful,
look favorably on your servant Francis,
whom you have set at the head of your Church as her shepherd;Grant, we pray, that by word and example
he may be of service to those over whom he presides
so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care,
he may come to everlasting life.Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Amen.
